Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain on Thursday acknowledged that the relations between Bangladesh and India had not been ‘smooth’ and faced some ‘setbacks’ during the tenure of the interim government.

He, however, expressed optimism that the next elected government would be able to address these challenges and make the relationship smoother finding some ways.

From the outset, Hossain said, the interim government laid emphasis on maintaining a ‘good working relationship’ with India.

The Foreign Affairs Adviser made the remarks during a views-exchange meeting with the media at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the afternoon.

Regarding an extradition request for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he said Bangladesh has not received any feedback yet.

Responding to a question, Adviser Hossain said the interim government is not leaving any burdens for the next elected government.

Rather, he said, it is advancing several issues to make easier some of things.

He cited the likely tariff deal with the United States as one such example, reports UNB.

The Adviser also said some of the agreements currently being signed had, in fact, been under negotiation for a long time.

Senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were also present at the meeting.
