Uruguayan Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin met with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus in Rome on Saturday to discuss expanding trade and investment ties between Bangladesh and Uruguay.

During the meeting, held at a hotel in Rome following their attendance at the funeral mass of Pope Francis, the two leaders underscored the importance of deepening economic cooperation—particularly between Dhaka and the Mercosur bloc—to foster shared prosperity.

They also explored ways to strengthen collaboration between Latin America and Asia, focusing on the evolving global trade landscape and the need for inclusive growth.

According to Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, Professor Yunus and Minister Lubetkin discussed strategies for investing in youth and promoting social business enterprises. Both sides expressed interest in expanding cooperation in untapped sectors.

Reaffirming their commitment to a shared vision of a "Three Zero" world—zero unemployment, zero wealth concentration, and zero net carbon emissions—they agreed to continue high-level dialogue to drive progress.

Professor Yunus extended an invitation to Minister Lubetkin to visit Bangladesh in the near future to build on the momentum of this engagement.

The meeting was attended by Lamiya Morshed, SDG Coordinator for the Bangladesh government; Tareq Ariful Islam, Bangladesh Ambassador to the Vatican; and Rokebul Haque, Bangladesh Ambassador to Italy.
