During the meeting, they explored topics of mutual interest, including global trade dynamics, expanding cultural ties, and Inditex’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives in Bangladesh. Maceiras praised Prof. Yunus’ speech at the Bangladesh Investment Summit, calling it “very inspirational.”
Inditex, the world’s largest fast fashion group, owns several major brands, including Zara, Bershka, and Massimo Dutti. Maceiras emphasized Bangladesh’s key role as a sourcing hub for the company, reaffirming their intention to further strengthen their partnership. “We have very strong ties, and Bangladesh is very business-friendly for sourcing,” he stated.
Discussing the evolving global trade landscape, Maceiras noted that Bangladesh is “well-positioned” to take advantage of emerging opportunities, despite the complexities of global trade.
After visiting several Bangladeshi factories, Maceiras expressed admiration for the wide range of products produced in the country. He also announced a new initiative to support the education of at least 50 female workers from Inditex’s Bangladeshi factories, funding their graduate and postgraduate studies through an agreement with the Asian University for Women in Chittagong.
Additionally, Maceiras revealed the establishment of the Inditex Chair for Spanish Language and Culture at Dhaka University as part of the company’s efforts to strengthen cultural ties between Spain and Bangladesh.
The Chief Adviser praised Inditex’s CSR initiatives and reflected on his strong ties with Spain, including his longstanding relationship with former Spanish Queen Sofia. He also urged Inditex to increase investments in healthcare facilities for garment workers in Bangladesh.
Inditex officials shared that the company will soon begin air-shipping cargo from Sylhet International Airport, further enhancing its logistics operations in the country.
