The agreement was signed today by Bangladesh’s Home Adviser, Lt. Gen. Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.), and the visiting Gambian Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Dr. Mamadou Tangara, representing their respective governments.
Following the signing, both ministers hailed the agreement as a landmark achievement in bilateral relations, reaffirming their commitment to deepen cooperation in the coming years.
In his remarks, Lt. Gen. Jahangir Alam expressed his satisfaction with the agreement, calling it a “special moment” for both countries. “This step reflects our mutual commitment to enhancing cooperation and fostering closer ties between our nations,” he stated.
Alam also underscored Bangladesh's deep appreciation for Gambia’s principled stance on key international issues, particularly its unwavering support on the Rohingya crisis. He praised Gambia's leadership in advocating for justice for the Rohingya at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), a position backed by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
“We have immense respect for Gambia’s steadfast support on the Rohingya issue, and this agreement only strengthens the foundations of our friendship,” he added.
Highlighting the potential for economic collaboration, the Home Adviser pointed out that sectors such as ready-made garments, food processing, IT and IT-enabled services, and pharmaceuticals present significant opportunities for growth. “It is now crucial that we translate our diplomatic goodwill into tangible business partnerships,” he emphasized.
On his part, Dr. Mamadou Tangara echoed similar sentiments, calling the visa exemption agreement a ‘milestone’ in the diplomatic relations between the two nations. He also expressed confidence that this would open new avenues for cooperation across various sectors.
Bangladesh now has visa exemption agreements with 30 countries, including China, Japan, South Korea, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Turkey, and several others in South Asia and beyond.
