Bangladesh, Japan Discuss PPP and Transport Projects

On Wednesday, Bangladesh and Japan held important discussions on the progress of various Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects in Bangladesh, with a particular focus on the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport Terminal-3 development and broader cooperation in the country's transport sector, including railways and roads.


The bilateral meeting, held at Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism in Tokyo, was led by Bangladesh's Principal Secretary to the Chief Adviser, M Siraz Uddin Miah. The Japanese delegation was headed by Hirofumi Amakawa, Vice Minister for Land, Infrastructure, and Transport. The two sides discussed key developments and future collaboration on these critical infrastructure projects.

Bangladesh's delegation informed the Japanese officials that significant progress has been made in the cargo and ground handling works for Terminal-3 of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, and they are working towards the fastest possible completion to inaugurate the terminal. Principal Secretary M Siraz Uddin Miah reiterated Bangladesh’s commitment to offering full cooperation to ensure the successful completion of these projects.

The discussions also included several large-scale infrastructure projects in Bangladesh, such as the Kamalapur Multi-Modal Transport Hub, MRT Line 6, and the Dhaka Outer Ring Road-2 and 3. Both sides explored ways to further enhance collaboration on these initiatives, which are vital to Bangladesh's growing urban transportation network.

Additionally, Bangladesh sought Japan's assistance in attracting more Japanese investment in the country's tourism sector, recognizing Japan's expertise in the field.

The meeting was attended by several senior officials, including Japan’s Assistant Vice Minister for Engineering and Housing Affairs, Yosuke Tsutsumi, along with key representatives from Bangladesh, such as Senior Secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Division Md. Ehsanul Hoque, Railways Secretary Md. Fahimul Islam, Civil Aviation and Tourism Secretary Nasreen Jahan, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Public-Private Partnership Authority, Muhammad Rafiqul Islam. Also present were Bangladesh's Ambassador to Japan Md. Daud Ali and Director General of the Chief Advisor’s office, Dr. Ahmed Ullah.

Both nations emphasized their commitment to deepening bilateral ties and fostering greater economic cooperation, particularly in the areas of infrastructure development and tourism investment.
