Bangladesh Summons Indian Envoy Over Hasina’s Remarks

Bangladesh has lodged a strong protest with India over alleged false and fabricated statements made by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, which the government claims are intended to create instability in the country while she stays in Delhi.

On Thursday, the Foreign Ministry summoned India’s acting high commissioner in Dhaka and handed over a formal protest letter. The ministry confirmed this in an official statement.

Addressing reporters, Foreign Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain said Bangladesh has officially requested India to prevent Sheikh Hasina from making such remarks, as they go against the country’s interests.

"We have yet to receive a response. Given the recent developments, Bangladesh has again sent a protest note and formally summoned the Indian envoy," he stated.

The protest note conveyed Bangladesh’s deep concern and disappointment, asserting that Sheikh Hasina’s statements are damaging to bilateral relations and hurt public sentiment. The ministry urged India to take immediate action to prevent the former prime minister from spreading what it described as false and inflammatory statements on social media and other platforms.

This marks at least the fourth time in six months that Bangladesh has summoned Indian diplomats over various issues, including an attack on the Bangladesh mission in Agartala and the killing of a Bangladeshi citizen at the border.
