Flags of Bangladesh and Brazil
Brazil has formally expressed support for Bangladesh’s bid for the presidency of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly and assured cooperation regarding Dhaka’s aspiration to join BRICS, marking a significant development in bilateral relations between the two countries.
The assurances came during a high-level meeting in Brasília between Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir and Celso Amorim at the Palácio do Planalto.
During the meeting, both sides agreed to strengthen Bangladesh-Brazil relations through broader political engagement, economic cooperation, multilateral coordination and stronger Global South partnerships.
At the outset, Amorim conveyed greetings from Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and described Bangladesh as an increasingly influential voice of the Global South with a growing role in international affairs.
Humayun Kabir noted that Brazil was the first South American country to recognise Bangladesh after its independence and said bilateral ties had now entered a new strategic phase.
One of the major outcomes of the meeting was Brazil’s proposal to establish a “Tête-à-Tête Strategic Forum”, aimed at creating a regular high-level dialogue mechanism between the two countries to deepen political understanding and strategic coordination.
Kabir welcomed the initiative, saying the forum would help strengthen long-term cooperation and mutual trust.
