Netrokona, Jan 8: Railway police arrested two youths for robbing passengers at knifepoint on the intercity Haor Express train running on the Dhaka–Mohonganj route.
The incident took place around 2:30 am early Wednesday near the Keowatkhali area, close to Mymensingh station. Police recovered two knives used in the robbery, Tk 4,100 in cash and a smartphone from the suspects.
According to police and victims, the train left Mymensingh station around 2:15 am for Mohonganj when the two youths began threatening passengers with sharp weapons and snatching money and mobile phones as the train reached Keowatkhali. Hearing the victims’ screams, railway police personnel from a nearby coach, with help from other passengers, caught the robbers red-handed.
The train later reached Mohonganj station, where the detainees were handed over to Mohonganj Railway Police Outpost. The victims are residents of Barhatta, Mohonganj and Khaliajuri areas of Netrokona district.
The arrested individuals were identified as Azmain Hossain Nijhum (30) of Keowatkhali area in Mymensingh city and Md Mehedi Hasan Tanvir (18).
Confirming the matter, SI Mobarak Hossain, in-charge of Mohonganj Railway Police Outpost, said on Thursday afternoon that the suspects were handed over to Mymensingh Railway Police Station and legal proceedings, including filing of a case, are underway. - UNB
