At least 10 people were injured in a violent clash between two factions of the BNP over the distribution of rice to fishermen in the Baharia area of Chandpur Sadar on Monday, March 17.

The confrontation occurred around noon near the Baharia Bazar Union Parishad Complex during the distribution of rice (VGF) to fishermen in wards 3 and 9 who had abstained from catching jhatka hilsa.

Locals reported that tensions flared between supporters of Nuru Bhuiyan, the president of the Union BNP, and Sumon Ahmed Bhuiyan, the vice president of the Union BNP, when some fishermen without the proper distribution cards attempted to collect rice. The argument quickly escalated into a physical altercation, with both sides using sticks and local weapons.

Dr. Mahmudul Hasan, an emergency department doctor at Chandpur Government General Hospital, confirmed that a person named Rabby had been stabbed in the head and referred to Dhaka for advanced treatment. Other injured individuals received first aid and were discharged after treatment.

Md. Bahar Mia, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station, stated that police responded quickly to the scene and managed to restore order. To prevent further violence, additional security forces were deployed in the area.

Despite the severity of the clash, no formal complaint has been filed with the police station as of yet.
