A man was stabbed to death and his wife critically injured by a youth at the Municipal Town Hall premises in Kurigram on Saturday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Mansur Ali, 60, a caretaker of Kurigram Municipality and resident of Chhay Anipara area. His injured wife, Mollika Begum, 55, is currently undergoing treatment at Kurigram 250-Bed General Hospital.

Locals caught the accused Shahnewaz alias Sunny, 32, son of Julhas Ahmed of Sardarpara, and handed him over to the police.

Locals said a discussion meeting marking National Revolution and Solidarity Day was being held at the Town Hall on Saturday.

Mansur Ali barred Sunny from consuming drugs on the premises during the event, leading to an altercation. After the programme ended and attendees left, Mansur's wife arrived with lunch around 4pm. Sunny ambushed the couple with a knife, leaving both seriously injured.

Hearing their screams, locals rescued them and rushed them to Kurigram General Hospital.

Dr. Nur-e-Newaz, the hospital superintendent, said Mansur Ali succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.

His wife Mollika Begum has been admitted to the hospital with serious injuries, Dr Newaz said.

Kamal Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kurigram Sadar Police Station, said Sunny has already been taken into custody, and legal procedures are underway, reports UNB.
