Bangladesh have climbed to their highest-ever position in the ICC Test rankings following their historic Test victory over Australia.

In the latest rankings released on Sunday, Bangladesh moved up three places to sixth with 78 rating points, surpassing their previous best seventh position.

The rise came largely after Bangladesh secured a nine-wicket victory over Australia in Darwin, marking their first-ever Test win on Australian soil.

Australia remain at the top of the rankings, followed by South Africa, New Zealand, India and England. Bangladesh are now sixth, while Sri Lanka, Pakistan and the West Indies occupy seventh, eighth and ninth places with 76, 75 and 74 points respectively.

However, Bangladesh’s sixth position remains vulnerable as only a small gap separates them from the teams immediately below.

Bangladesh had previously reached seventh in the Test rankings after beating Pakistan 2-0 at home. The victory in Australia has now taken Najmul Hossain Shanto’s side to a new high.

Bangladesh drew their two-match Test series against Australia 1-1, after losing the second Test in Mackay.

Despite missing out on a series victory, Bangladesh’s first Test win in Australia and their subsequent rise to sixth in the rankings marked a historic achievement for the team.
