Bangladesh’s short winter is expected to end in February, though forecasters warn of one last chill and occasional storms towards the month’s close.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast a mild cold wave over parts of the country in early February, followed by rising temperatures and the chance of isolated thunderstorms, some with hail, later in the month.
Meteorologist Md Tariful Newaz Kabir said that December, January, and February together constitute winter in Bangladesh. “Pre-monsoon conditions usually begin towards the end of February. Day and night temperatures will gradually rise and may remain normal to above normal,” he added.
According to the one-month outlook, the northern, western, and north-western regions may experience a mild cold wave in the first half of February. Moderate to dense fog is likely over river basins, with light to moderate fog elsewhere.
In the latter half of the month, isolated thunderstorms are expected on one or two days across different regions, potentially accompanied by hail. Kabir noted that some areas are already seeing temperatures around 10°C, which could dip slightly further at the start of February.
Over the 24 hours to Sunday, the Met Office recorded the lowest temperature at 10.2°C in Chuadanga and the highest at 32.5°C in Teknaf.
The February outlook also suggests below-normal rainfall, with no cyclones or low-pressure systems expected in the Bay of Bengal. Water flow in major rivers is forecast to remain normal throughout the month.
