Ishraque Files Writ Petition Seeking Oath as DSCC Mayor

Engineer Ishraque Hossain, a member of the BNP Chairperson's Advisory Committee on International Affairs, has filed a writ petition with the High Court, seeking to be sworn in as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

The petition was submitted on Sunday to the relevant branch of the High Court on Ishraque's behalf.

This move follows the dismissal of an earlier writ petition on Thursday that sought to halt Ishraque’s oath-taking. A High Court bench comprising Justice Md Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury rejected the plea, stating that the petitioner lacked the legal standing to file the writ. The court also ruled that the case, stemming from an electoral issue, was brought before the High Court without first pursuing proper legal channels.

The previous petition had been filed on May 14 by Dhaka South resident Md Mamunur Rashid, who sought both a stay on Ishraque’s swearing-in and punitive action against the electoral tribunal judge who declared him mayor. Advocate Kazi Akbar Ali filed the petition on his behalf.

Ishraque’s new writ seeks enforcement of the tribunal’s judgment that declared him the lawful mayor and urges the court to direct the necessary authorities to arrange for his immediate swearing-in.
