Member of Parliament from Kushtia-3, Amir Hamza, has secured anticipatory bail from the High Court in a defamation case linked to alleged derogatory remarks about State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku.

A High Court bench granted the bail on Monday following a hearing on the petition filed by the lawmaker. The order offers him protection from arrest in connection with the case for a specified period, allowing him to seek further legal remedies.

The case was filed on April 2 at the Sirajganj District and Sessions Judge’s Court by Advocate Humayun Kabir Colonel, general secretary of the Sirajganj District Lawyers’ Association. The complaint alleges that Hamza made statements that harmed the reputation of the minister and created public confusion.

According to the case details, during a Friday sermon at Haripur Jame Masjid on March 27, the MP allegedly claimed that the current deputy commissioner of Kushtia had paid a large sum of money to secure a transfer to the district. The remarks later spread widely on social media, drawing criticism and prompting legal action.

Following the filing of the case, the Sirajganj court issued a summons on April 2, asking Hamza to appear before it on April 21. When he failed to appear, the court subsequently issued an arrest warrant against him on April 21.

The High Court’s anticipatory bail now temporarily shields the MP from arrest, while the legal proceedings in the lower court are expected to continue. The development comes amid increasing scrutiny over public statements by political figures and their potential legal consequences.
