Customers in Dhaka are facing difficulties withdrawing cash from ATM booths during the Eid-ul-Adha holidays, as several banks reportedly struggle with cash shortages and withdrawal restrictions, despite instructions from the central bank to ensure uninterrupted ATM services throughout the festive period.

With all scheduled banks set to remain closed for seven consecutive days during Eid-ul-Adha, many people are relying heavily on ATMs as their main source of cash. However, users have complained that multiple booths are either out of cash or limiting withdrawal amounts.

A visit to different areas of the capital, including Motijheel, Malibagh, Moghbazar and Karwan Bazar, on Sunday and Monday found that several ATMs, particularly those operated by financially weaker banks, were completely out of service due to cash shortages. Even some major banks were seen imposing withdrawal limits.

In several cases, ATM services were restricted for customers using cards issued by other banks. Where interbank withdrawals were available, reduced cash limits added further inconvenience during the holiday period.

Frustrated customers expressed their grievances on social media. One user, Saiful Islam Malek, described the situation as “a betrayal of customers,” saying people were being forced to repeatedly visit ATM booths just to access their own money.

Another user, Rafiq Islam, said he failed to withdraw cash even after visiting three ATM booths of a major private bank in Mirpur, as all were out of cash.

In response, Bangladesh Bank spokesperson and Executive Director Arief Hossain Khan said the central bank had supplied adequate cash based on banks’ demands.

He said no bank returned without receiving cash from Bangladesh Bank and added that any failure in cash availability is due to internal management issues of the respective banks.

He also said instructions were issued in advance to ensure uninterrupted ATM operations, mobile financial services and online payment systems during the Eid holidays. Regulatory action will be taken against banks that fail to comply.

Earlier, Bangladesh Bank directed all scheduled banks to ensure sufficient cash in ATMs, resolve technical problems quickly, strengthen security, and maintain uninterrupted digital services, including POS and mobile financial platforms.

All scheduled banks in Bangladesh are closed for seven consecutive days from May 25 to May 31 for Eid-ul-Adha holidays.
