US President Donald Trump arrives to announce the US Navy’s new Golden Fleet initiative, unveiling a new class of warships, at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, on December 22, 2025.
US President Donald Trump on Monday announced plans for a new class of heavily armed warships bearing his name, a distinction typically reserved for leaders after they leave office.
Initially, two Trump-class vessels will be built, though Trump said the number could increase significantly. He described the ships as among the most lethal surface combat vessels ever developed by the United States and claimed they would be the largest of their kind in the country’s history.
The announcement was made at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, alongside senior national security officials, with displays showing conceptual designs of the high-tech ships.
Trump declined to say whether the new warships were intended to counter China, instead saying they were designed to deter any potential adversary. He added that the vessels would displace between 30,000 and 40,000 tonnes and be equipped with advanced missiles, guns and emerging technologies such as lasers and hypersonic weapons.
According to Trump, the ships would also be capable of carrying nuclear-armed sea-launched cruise missiles. While larger than existing US destroyers and cruisers, the proposed vessels would still be smaller than the Iowa-class battleships retired in the 1990s.
Trump said he would take a personal interest in the design of the ships, citing his focus on aesthetics as well as military capability.
The announcement comes as the US Navy pursues broader fleet modernization, including plans for new frigates to complement larger multi-mission warships. Officials have said some earlier shipbuilding programs are under review amid concerns over delays and costs.
US policymakers have increasingly voiced concern about the rapid expansion of China’s naval forces. Trump said the new warship program was part of a broader effort to revive American shipbuilding and ensure the United States maintains the world’s most powerful naval fleet for decades to come.
