US President Donald Trump has claimed that he saved the life of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and that he deserved at least a thank you for it. Expressing his displeasure, Trump said that instead of showing gratitude, Khamenei claimed victory in the war.

Trump made the remarks in response to Khamenei’s claim that Iran had won the 12-day war against Israel. On Friday (June 27), Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social: “I saved Khamenei from a horrible and disgraceful death, but he didn’t even say thank you.”

Citing the need to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, Israel launched a military offensive against Iran on June 13. The attacks, which included missile strikes by the U.S., targeted both military and civilian installations, including nuclear facilities. Several top Iranian military officials and nuclear scientists were killed.

Israel had also planned to assassinate Ayatollah Khamenei but failed. After 12 days of attacks and counterattacks, a ceasefire was announced on Tuesday (June 24), following Trump's declaration.

Two days after the ceasefire, on Thursday (June 26), Ayatollah Khamenei appeared in public and addressed the nation. In his speech, he claimed "victory" over Israel. He said the Iranian people had shown unity, sending the message that "our people speak with one voice."

Khamenei also stated that Donald Trump had urged Iran to “completely surrender,” adding, “Such words are not befitting of a U.S. president.” He said, “It is an insult to speak of surrender for a great nation and country like Iran.”

On Friday, Trump responded to Khamenei’s speech. He expressed outrage at Khamenei’s claim of victory. In a lengthy post on Truth Social, Trump said that despite saving Khamenei from a “shameful death,” he received no thanks.

Trump claimed he knew where Khamenei had taken shelter during the attacks in Iran but did not allow Israeli or U.S. forces to kill him. He strongly criticized Khamenei’s declaration of victory, calling it “false and foolish.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned Trump’s comments about Khamenei, calling them “disrespectful and unacceptable.” In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), he said:

“If President Trump sincerely wants a deal, he must stop using disrespectful language toward Ayatollah Khamenei and refrain from hurting the sentiments of his millions of supporters.”
