Trump Fires First Black Librarian of Congress: Senator

Greenwatch Desk World News 2025-05-09, 9:03pm

President Donald Trump has abruptly fired Carla Hayden, the first woman and African American to serve as Librarian of Congress, according to a senator’s statement.

New Mexico Senator Martin Heinrich revealed late Thursday that Hayden received an email notifying her of her immediate dismissal.

“Dr. Hayden brought the Library of Congress to the people, reaching rural communities and expanding digital access,” Heinrich said. “While President Trump pushes censorship, Dr. Hayden championed open access to knowledge.”

Appointed in 2016, Hayden was nearing the end of her 10-year term. Conservative critics, including the American Accountability Foundation, had accused her of promoting “radical ideologies.” Hours before her termination, the group posted: “Carla Hayden is woke, anti-Trump, and promotes trans-ing kids... It's time to get her OUT.”

The Library of Congress supports legislative research and oversees extensive cultural archives. The librarian also manages the Copyright Office and appoints the poet laureate.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries condemned the firing as “a disgrace” and “an assault on the American way of life.”

The Library of Congress has yet to comment.
