Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has highlighted the deepening relationship between Tehran and Moscow, declaring that the two countries have never cooperated as closely as they do today following talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in the Iranian capital.

In a post on X, Araghchi described the discussions as “timely talks” and said they covered a broad range of regional and international developments, reflecting the two countries’ shared interest in strengthening diplomatic coordination amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

The talks addressed several key regional and global issues, including the situations in Lebanon, Palestine, Ukraine and Yemen. The discussions underscored the importance both sides attach to developments affecting regional stability, international security and the wider geopolitical landscape.

Araghchi also pointed to the expansion of economic and nuclear cooperation as a key focus of the meeting, signalling Tehran’s interest in further strengthening bilateral ties with Moscow across strategic and economic sectors.

Relations between Iran and Russia have expanded in recent years, with both countries seeking closer coordination on political, economic and security matters. Their growing engagement has taken place against a backdrop of heightened international tensions and pressure from Western governments, creating additional incentives for Tehran and Moscow to strengthen their bilateral partnership.

Economic cooperation remains an important part of the relationship, as both countries look for opportunities to develop trade, investment and other forms of collaboration. However, the extent to which the latest discussions will translate into new agreements or concrete initiatives remains unclear.

The reference to nuclear cooperation is particularly significant given the international scrutiny surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme. Tehran has consistently maintained that its nuclear activities are peaceful, while the programme remains a major concern in relations between Iran and Western powers. Araghchi’s remarks did not specify which nuclear-related projects or agreements were discussed during the meeting.

The exchange between Araghchi and Lavrov also comes as conflicts and diplomatic disputes continue to shape the international agenda. Developments in the Middle East, the war in Ukraine and tensions involving other regional actors remain important issues for both governments.

By describing the current relationship as unprecedented in its closeness, Araghchi sought to emphasise the strategic importance Tehran places on its partnership with Moscow. His remarks suggest that Iran intends to continue pursuing closer cooperation with Russia on diplomatic and economic issues, while exploring opportunities to expand collaboration in areas of mutual interest.

Neither the reported remarks nor the available details of the meeting establish whether specific new agreements were reached. Further details would be needed to determine the practical outcomes of the discussions and the scope of any proposed expansion in economic and nuclear cooperation.
