At least 12 pilgrims were killed and several others injured after an out-of-control truck ploughed into devotees near the Sheetla Mata Temple in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India, early Sunday.

The accident occurred at around 1:30am when a truck carrying paddy reportedly broke through police barricades on a steep road before crashing into the temple’s outer wall and gate, striking pilgrims gathered nearby.

According to local authorities, 39 people were taken to hospital, including those who died. Five to six injured people were reported to be in critical condition.

Two police personnel on duty were also injured in the incident.

Authorities have launched an investigation into how the truck breached the barricades and are examining the vehicle to determine the cause of the crash.

The incident has raised questions about road safety and crowd protection near the temple, where devotees had gathered for religious activities.
