At least 15 Indian tourists were killed after a tourist speedboat capsized off southern Vietnam on Saturday while returning from an island excursion, according to state media.
The vessel was carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew members when it overturned about 400 metres from Hon May Rut Ngoai Island near Phu Quoc, Vietnam's largest island, authorities said.
Witnesses said nearby boats rushed to the scene and began rescuing passengers before border guards, naval personnel, coast guard members and other emergency responders arrived.
Rescue efforts were hampered by rough seas, with several passengers reportedly trapped inside the overturned vessel.
Authorities said 21 people were rescued, while the bodies of all 15 victims were recovered. Those injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Phu Quoc, located in the Gulf of Thailand, is one of Vietnam's most popular tourist destinations. Hon May Rut Ngoai Island, about 10 kilometres south of Phu Quoc, is renowned for its white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters, attracting millions of domestic and international visitors each year.
The cause of the accident was not immediately known. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
