The UN Secretary-General’s commitment to women’s leadership was recognised at a pivotal moment marked by global uncertainty, economic volatility and growing pressure on hard-won rights.

Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed recently convened women leaders in Manhasset, Long Island, for the fifth consecutive year to reaffirm their collective commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), women’s rights, gender equality and the principles of the UN Charter.

Fundamental rights

Participants underscored that gender equality is a fundamental human rights issue and a cornerstone of sustainable development, peace, security and inclusive prosperity.

Against a backdrop of rising inequality, the UN women leaders stressed that the world must safeguard the progress achieved through their collective efforts.

The meeting also highlighted the decisive role of women’s leadership as an essential condition for building more just, inclusive, equal and peaceful societies.

Deep understanding of global crises

Bringing together women leaders with deep, first-hand understanding of today’s interconnected global crises, the gathering focused on advancing policy-driven, solutions-oriented approaches to the world’s most pressing challenges.

The urgent removal of systemic barriers to women’s leadership across political, economic and social spheres was identified as a critical and immediate priority.

Discussions were grounded in today’s stark global realities and centred on advancing priorities related to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, artificial intelligence, philanthropy, financing human dignity and the state of multilateralism in a rapidly changing world.

Strong call to action

The gathering also featured a meaningful interaction with young people, whose perspectives and engagement enriched the dialogue and reinforced the urgency of intergenerational collaboration.

The meeting concluded with a strong and unified call to action to protect multilateralism, increase investment and promote women’s leadership at every level.
