Dead whale float to Kuakata Sea

Patuakhali: A dead baleen whale, about 40 feet long, has washed up in the Bay of Bengal adjacent to Kuakata in Patuakhali. Fishermen saw the whale floating in the deep sea 15 kilometers south of Kuakata at 11:30 am on Wednesday.

Upon receiving this news, members of the Coastal Environment Protection Movement Kuakata (Upara) reached the spot and tried to rescue the whale. However, since the whale was half-rotten, immediate rescue was not possible, but members of the Upara said that it was floating towards the beach due to the pull of the current. Locals said that this is the largest dead whale to have washed up on the Kuakata beach so far.

Upara convener Bachchu Khalifa said that the whale's movements are being monitored by going into the sea with a speedboat. The whale will be about 40 feet long. The whale may reach the beach by the afternoon due to the pull of the current. It is believed that the whale died about a week ago. However, the cause of death could not be confirmed. He has demanded that the whale's skeleton be preserved by the relevant authorities. - Gofran Palash
