
Southwest monsoon conditions are becoming increasingly active in Bangladesh, with favourable conditions expected to help the seasonal rain system advance from the Chattogram region into central parts of the country within the next 48 hours.
As a result, light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally winds and lightning are likely in most divisions, including Dhaka, over the next five days, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
The weather agency has also forecast moderate to very heavy rainfall in some parts of the country during the period.
The forecast was issued on Saturday by meteorologist Dr Md Omar Faruk.
According to the BMD, within the next 24 hours, many areas of Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions may experience temporary gusty winds along with light to moderate rain or thunderstorms.
Several areas in Rangpur, Rajshahi and Mymensingh divisions may also see similar weather conditions, while moderate to heavy rainfall is possible in some places.
Daytime temperatures across the country may fall slightly, while night temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged.
For the 24-hour period beginning Sunday evening, rain or thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds are likely in many places across Mymensingh, Dhaka, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, and at isolated locations in Rangpur, Rajshahi and Khulna divisions. Moderate to heavy rainfall may occur in some areas, while temperatures are expected to remain largely stable.
On Monday, scattered rain or thunderstorms are likely in parts of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, with isolated showers possible in Rajshahi division. Day temperatures may rise slightly, while night temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged.
Tuesday’s forecast suggests rain and thunderstorms in many areas of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, with isolated rainfall in Rajshahi, Khulna and Barishal divisions. Moderate to very heavy rainfall is possible in parts of the country, while night temperatures may rise slightly.
On Wednesday, similar weather is expected in several regions, including Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, with isolated rainfall forecast in Rajshahi and Khulna divisions.
The weather office also indicated that rainfall activity may intensify toward the end of the five-day forecast period.
