Global Water Partnership Investment Transformation Agenda
Appoints H.E Jakaya Kikwete Former President of Tanzania Co-Chair, Global Transformation Council
Alex Simalabwi, GWPO CEO & Executive Secretary of GWP has shared that the Global Water Partnership is embarking on a Global Transformation Agenda on Water Investments—a bold and necessary step to accelerate the mobilisation and deployment of climate-resilient water investments and expand global partnerships. By 2030, at least USD 15 billion will be leveraged, with an initial €500 million mobilised in collaboration with G20 countries, Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs), Climate Funds, and other key partners. The agenda will also strengthen and build on the ongoing collaboration with GWP Sponsoring Partners, Finance Partners, and other key partners.
To drive this agenda at the highest level of global leadership, the High-Level Global Transformation Council (GTC) has been established, comprising current and former Heads of State as well as high-level representatives from the public and private sectors. H.E. Jakaya Kikwete, Former President of the Republic of Tanzania, has been appointed as one of the founding Co-Chairs.
Key steps in the Transformation Agenda towards climate-resilient water investments:
• Strengthening global leadership and commitment towards climate resilience, water security, and financial sustainability through expanded partnerships and collaboration with G20, MDBs, and climate finance institutions.
• Scaling up investments in climate-resilient water security, at least USD 15 billion will be leveraged, with an initial €500 million.
• Enhancing regional impact through new decentralised GWPO Technical Hubs in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America & Caribbean to work jointly with GWP Regional Water Partnerships.
• Establishing the GWPO Transition Office in South Africa to lead the transition and relocation of GWP’s global secretariat.
Honorable Pemmy Majodina, Minister of Water and Sanitation, South Africa, welcomed the news on the establishment of the GWPO Transition Office in South Africa and accepted the invitation to join the High-Level Global Transformation Council (GTC) in her capacity as host Minister responsible for water and sanitation in South Africa, the current Chair of the G20.
Adopted by GWP Board (Steering Committee), GWP Technical Committee, and GWP Regions, the Transformation Agenda was announced by Alex Simalabwi, GWPO CEO & Executive Secretary of GWP, on the sidelines of the 38th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa—a pivotal step towards a more water-secure world.
GWP invites valued GWP Partners, to join it in this transformative journey.
