One person has died, and two others are missing after a boat carrying 40 laborers capsized in the Jamuna River at Kulakandi, Islampur upazila in Jamalpur on Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as 45-year-old Bilal Mondol, son of Shamsul Mondol, from Kulakandi Madhyapara village.

Islampur Fire Service Station Officer Mazharul Islam confirmed that rescue efforts are ongoing for the two missing workers, identified as Selim, 35, and Khabir Ali, 35, both from the same village. If they are not found by evening, the operation may be suspended.

According to police, fire service personnel, and eyewitnesses, the incident occurred when the boat, carrying between 40 to 45 laborers, was en route from Kulakandi Ferry Ghat to Char Kulakandi. The boat capsized in the middle of the river, throwing several passengers into the water. While most managed to swim to safety, three individuals went missing.

A diving team from Jamalpur Fire Service began a rescue operation and recovered one body after nearly three hours of search efforts.

Islampur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saifullah Saif said they are closely monitoring the situation.
