A university student was found dead in the Mrigi River in Sherpur on Sunday evening, around 26 hours after he went missing.

The deceased was identified as Syed Sadman Joy, 22, a second-year student of Journalism and Media Studies at Stamford University Bangladesh.

A diving team from Jamalpur Fire Service recovered his body from the river in the Bhataraghat area under Bhatshala union around 6:30pm.

According to family members, Joy went to the riverbank with a friend on Saturday afternoon. During a drive by the Department of Narcotics Control, his friend was detained with drugs and later sent to jail by a mobile court.

The family said Joy panicked during the drive and jumped into the river while trying to reach the opposite bank. He remained missing since then.

Nasrin Akter, additional superintendent of police (Sadar Circle), said police assisted the family after they sought help and arranged for the fire service diving team to conduct the search.

Narcotics Control Department Inspector Md Helal Uddin said an anti-drug drive was conducted there on Saturday and one person was arrested with drugs, but they were unaware that anyone had jumped into the river.

Sherpur Sadar Police Station OC Khokon Chandra Ghosh said no injury marks were found on the body during the inquest and the family had not filed any complaint, reports UNB.
