Newlywed woman's body found hanging at in-laws’ house in Narail

NARAIL, Sept. 30 - Police on Wednesday morning recovered the body of a housewife from her in-laws' house in Ramchandrapur village under Narail Sadar upazila, just one month after her marriage.

Following the incident, police detained her husband, Arafat Sheikh, for interrogation.

The deceased was identified as Popi Khanam, hailing from Barishal district. Her husband, Arafat Sheikh, son of Tipu Sultan of Ramchandrapur village, works as an assistant to a truck driver.

According to locals and family sources, Arafat married Popi a month ago as his third wife.

On Tuesday night and again on Wednesday morning, altercations broke out between the couple, during which Arafat allegedly physically assaulted Popi.

In-laws claimed that Popi committed suicide by hanging herself with a scarf following the assault. However, local suspicion has arisen over whether the death was a suicide or a planned murder.

Ajay Kumar Kundu, Narail Sadar Police Station Inspector (Investigation), said legal action will follow upon receiving a written complaint. The body was  sent to the Narail Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy,  he added. - UNB
