Police recovered the body of an elderly man from the bank of a canal in Paikgachha upazila of Khulna on Monday morning.

The deceased was identified as Birinchi Pada Mondal, 106.

Police said they recovered the body from a canal bank in Lata Union at around 8am after receiving information through the national emergency service hotline 999.

Sub-Inspector Md Moniruzzaman of Paikgachha Police Station said that Birinchi had been suffering from mental imbalance for the last two years and often left home without informing family members.

He remained outside throughout Sunday and was brought home by his sons in the evening. However, he left the house again at around 9 pm.

Later, at about midnight, some local people from a nearby market informed his sons by phone that Birinchi had been seen there. The family members went to the spot but could not find him, reports BSS.

Early Monday, local worshippers noticed his body lying on the canal bank while going for Fajr prayers and informed police through the 999 emergency service.

Police recovered the body and notified family members, who later identified it. As no complaint was lodged and no foul play was alleged, the body was handed over to the family.
