Bus Fares Rise by 17 Paisa Per Kilometre

Bus fares have been increased by 17 paisa per kilometre on both long-distance routes and city services, including those in the capital, following the recent increase in fuel prices.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges on Tuesday (September 22).

Earlier, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) had proposed increasing fares by 20 paisa per kilometre for long-distance buses and 18 paisa for buses operating in urban areas, including Dhaka. The proposal followed the government’s decision to raise fuel prices by Tk 20 per litre.

In April, bus fares were increased by 11 paisa per kilometre after diesel prices rose by Tk 15 per litre. Before the latest adjustment, fares for buses in the Dhaka and Chattogram metropolitan areas stood at Tk 2.53 per kilometre, while the rate for minibuses was Tk 2.42.

For 52-seat buses operating on long-distance routes, the existing fare was Tk 2.23 per kilometre. However, fares for some non-AC long-distance buses can be higher because operators have reduced seating capacity to provide more space for passengers. Additional tolls for bridges and roads may also be included in fares.

The revised fare structure will be determined based on the latest adjustment following the fuel price increase.
