The government has raised bus fares by 11 paisa per kilometre, in the wake of the recent hike in fuel prices.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam made the announcement of new fares for buses and minibuses following a meeting with transport owners and workers at the Secretariat on Thursday.

He said the new fares will be application only for diesel-run buses, not CNG-powered ones.

As per the new chart, the fare for buses and minibuses increased from Tk 2.42 per kilometre to Tk 2.53 per kilometre in Dhaka and Chattogram metropolitan areas.

On long-distance routes, the bus fare went up from Tk 2.12 per kilometre to Tk 2.23 per kilometre.

On April 18, the government hiked fuel prices, raising the price of diesel by Tk 15 per litre, octane by Tk 20, petrol by Tk 19, and kerosene by Tk 18, reports UNB.

Following the hike, bus owners and workers made the demand for raising the public transport fares.
