PS Masud Returns to Revive Heritage and River Tourism

Shipping and Labour and Employment Adviser Brigadier General (Retd) Dr M. Sakhawat Hussain has announced that the century-old paddle steamer PS Masud will soon return to service, blending heritage with river-based tourism in Bangladesh.

Speaking during an experimental voyage of the vessel on the Dhaka–Munshiganj route from Sadarghat on Friday, the adviser said the steamer, operated by the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), will begin regular operations on the Dhaka–Barishal route next month.

After extensive renovation and maintenance, PS Masud has been restored with modern facilities and improved safety features while retaining its traditional charm. “The steamer is now fully prepared,” Dr Sakhawat said. “Its mechanical and navigational performance is being tested through this trial run before regular operations begin.”

Describing the vessel as more than just a mode of transport, he said PS Masud symbolises Bangladesh’s rich riverine culture and traditions. “We want the new generation to experience how river routes once served as the main arteries of communication and culture,” he added.

The adviser also revealed that the government plans to restore other vintage steamers like PS Masud to preserve the nation’s river heritage and promote tourism.

“Rivers were once the lifeline of the Bangalee people,” Dr Sakhawat said. “Through PS Masud, we hope people will rediscover their deep, historic bond with the rivers — a living reflection of our past.”

According to BIWTC, PS Masud will operate weekly, departing from Dhaka to Barishal every Friday and returning the following day.
