PayPal Launch in Bangladesh Moves Closer, Says PM
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said steps are underway to introduce PayPal services in Bangladesh, signalling progress towards bringing the global payment platform into the country.
Speaking during a question-and-answer session in parliament on Tuesday, he said a committee has been formed to ensure the effective operation of hi-tech parks and ICT centres, alongside taking concrete measures to facilitate PayPal’s launch.
PayPal has expressed interest in entering the Bangladeshi market on several occasions, with renewed engagement seen during the tenure of the interim government.
Earlier, in December, the then Bangladesh Bank governor Ahsan H Mansur indicated that PayPal could begin operations in the country, highlighting its potential to simplify transactions for freelancers, e-commerce businesses, and the broader IT sector.
During that period, PayPal’s South Asia representatives, based in Singapore, also held discussions with local freelancers and officials from the ICT Division.
Once launched, the platform is expected to enhance cross-border payment efficiency, making it easier for individuals and businesses in Bangladesh to send and receive money globally.
