I hope this letter finds you in good health and spirits. I am writing to express my views regarding the upcoming elections in Bangladesh and the importance of ensuring that these elections are conducted in a manner that is genuinely inclusive and transparent.

As a neighboring country with strong historical ties to Bangladesh, India has a vested interest in the political stability and democratic health of this nation. It is essential that all voices within Bangladesh are heard and represented in the electoral process, particularly as the nation prepares for its next elections. Despite the obvious challenges facing the political landscape, an inclusive election is not only a moral imperative but also a critical component for long-lasting stability in the region.

While I understand that India has traditionally supported the Awami League and its incumbent leadership under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, recent developments have brought to light the necessity of adapting our diplomatic strategies to align more with democratic principles. Back in late 2023 New Delhi had engaged with the United States to alleviate sanctions and visa restrictions on Hasina’s government and relieve her of the pressure to hold free, fair and inclusive elections. The outcome was the lopsided January 2024 elections devoid of participation of the opposition. It is crucial that the latest diplomacy is aimed at fostering an environment conducive to free and fair elections, rather than merely reinforcing Delhi’s suooprt for only one party in Bangladesh.

Concerns surrounding the political environment in Bangladesh, including accusations of oppressive governance and suppression of dissent, cannot be overlooked. Encouraging a genuinely inclusive political dialogue and ensuring a level playing field for all parties will send a powerful message to the region and the world about India’s commitment to democratic values.

India's support should not solely be a function of its long-standing ties with the Awami League but rather a reflection of our shared commitment to universal democratic principles. It is vital that New Delhi advocates for measures that will empower all political factions in Bangladesh, thereby ensuring that the electorate can make their choices freely without fear or intimidation.

In conclusion, I urge you to consider the implications of our diplomatic stance on Bangladesh’s democratic processes. Supporting a truly inclusive election will not only bolster Bangladesh's political landscape but also solidify India’s position as a proponent of democracy in South Asia.

Thank you for your attention to this crucial matter. I look forward to seeing India play a constructive and supportive role in fostering democracy in Bangladesh.
