Bangladesh reached a new milestone in electricity production on Wednesday night, recording its highest-ever power generation at 17,200 megawatts (MW), according to an official notification issued by Power Grid Bangladesh PLC.
The record output was registered at 9:00pm, surpassing the previous peak generation level of 16,794MW that had been achieved on July 23, 2025. The latest figure marks a significant rise in the country’s electricity generation capacity and reflects increasing demand as well as improvements in power sector operations.
According to the notification, the record volume of electricity was successfully transmitted across the national grid without any disruption, ensuring a stable supply throughout the country. The state-owned power transmission company said the process was managed smoothly through coordinated operational efforts.
Officials attributed the achievement to the combined contribution of electricity generation facilities and power distribution agencies operating across the country. They said coordinated management and the effective functioning of the national power infrastructure played a key role in handling the unprecedented level of generation and transmission.
The latest milestone comes as Bangladesh continues efforts to strengthen its energy sector and improve power supply reliability amid growing industrial, commercial and household demand for electricity. Increased generation and efficient transmission capacity are considered essential for supporting economic activities and meeting the country's long-term development goals.
The record generation was achieved at a time when discussions are also continuing over broader issues in the power sector, including electricity pricing and supply management. Stakeholders recently raised concerns over proposals related to bulk power tariff adjustments, reflecting ongoing debates surrounding the sector’s financial sustainability and operational challenges.
