India has said BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s return to Bangladesh after more than 17 years in exile should be viewed in the context of the country’s move toward free, fair and inclusive elections.

Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India supports credible elections in Bangladesh and described Tarique Rahman’s return as part of that broader democratic context. He made the remarks while speaking at a weekly press briefing today.

Tarique Rahman returned to Bangladesh from London on December 25 following nearly 17 years abroad. His homecoming drew large crowds of supporters, who gathered along key routes in the capital to welcome him, waving party flags and chanting slogans.

The return of the BNP leader has generated significant public attention as the country prepares for its next general election, with political activities gaining momentum in the run-up to the polls.
