Inqilab Moncho on Saturday issued a 24-hour ultimatum demanding the resignation of Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, holding him responsible for what it described as a grave failure of law and order following the killing of the platform’s spokesperson, Shaheed Sharif Osman Hadi.
The ultimatum was announced at a protest gathering in Shahbagh in the afternoon, shortly after Hadi was laid to rest. Hundreds of activists, students and supporters assembled at the iconic intersection, turning the programme into a charged demonstration of grief and anger.
Alongside the demand for the adviser’s resignation, Inqilab Moncho called for a fair, transparent and credible investigation into Hadi’s killing and the immediate arrest of all those involved. Leaders of the platform warned that if their demands were not met within the stipulated 24 hours, they would launch tougher protest programmes involving students and the wider public across the country.
Addressing the gathering, speakers said the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi was not an isolated incident but a stark reflection of the deteriorating law-and-order situation in Bangladesh. They accused the Home Ministry of failing to ensure public safety and justice, arguing that accountability at the highest level was now unavoidable.
“The blood of Hadi is a question mark on the state’s responsibility,” one speaker said, adding that the government’s response in the coming hours would determine the next course of action for the movement.
Earlier in the day, at around 3:30pm, Sharif Osman Hadi was buried beside the mausoleum of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam near the Dhaka University Central Mosque. The burial was attended by Hadi’s family members, relatives, fellow activists and prominent figures, including Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) Chief Organiser for the Southern Region Hasnat Abdullah, Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan, Amar Desh editor Mahmudur Rahman, and leaders from Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU).
Hadi’s namaz-e-janaza was held earlier at 2:30pm at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. His elder brother, Abu Bakar Siddique, led the funeral prayers in the presence of a massive crowd of mourners who had gathered to pay their final respects.
As emotions continued to run high throughout the day, Inqilab Moncho reiterated that its movement would remain peaceful but resolute, insisting that justice for Hadi and accountability for his killing were non-negotiable.
