"We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and damage caused by the earthquake," Fakhrul said in a post on his verified Facebook page.
Addressing the nation, he wrote, "Dear countrymen, a strong earthquake occurred just a while ago. We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and damage caused by the earthquake. We pray for the departed souls and wish a quick recovery for the injured. May Allah keep us safe. Please remain alert and cautious. During any tremor, try to move to a safe place with care."
He also shared several precautionary measures for public awareness.
If indoors, he advised people to drop, cover, and hold on under a sturdy table or desk, and stay away from windows, glass, doors, heavy cupboards, and gas or fire sources. Elevators should not be used during an earthquake.
If outdoors, he urged people to stay clear of buildings, trees, electric wires, and signboards, and stand in an open area keeping their head low.
If inside a vehicle, he suggested stopping the car in a safe spot away from bridges, overpasses, buildings, or trees, and remaining inside until the shaking ends, reports BSS.
After the tremor, he advised checking gas, electric, and water lines, avoiding elevators, inspecting buildings for potential damage before exiting, and ensuring all family members are safe. He also reminded the public to stay prepared for aftershocks.
