“This election (scheduled for February next year) is not a traditional one; it is an election to save the country,” he said while addressing DCs from all 64 districts, including 50 newly appointed DCs, at the Chief Adviser’s Office.
He emphasised that the upcoming election is not merely about forming a government for the next five years; it is even more significant because it will include a referendum.
“This is a completely different election. The nation has seen many farcical elections in the past, and we must play our part in erasing those memories,” he said.
“This is an election following a people’s uprising—an election to complete that uprising. The future course of the century for the nation will be determined through this vote,” Prof Yunus added.
He stressed that the role of the DCs is crucial, leaving no room for failure of any kind.
“The nation will be reborn through this election, and the DCs will play the role of midwives,” he said.
Addressing the DCs, the Chief Adviser said, “You will learn everything you need to know. The election must be both festive and peaceful.”
He reminded that many young and female voters have been eligible to vote but have not been able to exercise their rights for the last 15 years.
Prof Yunus noted that international observers have already shown keen interest in the upcoming election and are eager to see how it unfolds.
“Making this election meaningful is part of our commitment to the people’s uprising. This election is a major campaign, and we must win it,” he said, adding, “We have to win this fight to survive as an independent nation.”
Planning Adviser Dr Wahiduddin Mahmud, Home Affairs Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, and Law Adviser Prof Asif Nazrul were present at the meeting conducted by Cabinet Division Secretary Sheikh Abdur Rashid, reports UNB.
