BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said that the signing of the July Charter marks the beginning of a new chapter in Bangladesh’s political history.

“After nearly eight months of hard work, today’s signing of the July Charter has opened a new chapter in Bangladesh’s political history,” Fakhrul told reporters after attending the July Charter signing ceremony at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

He expressed his sincere thanks and gratitude to Professor Muhammad Yunus, all political parties, members of the National Consensus Commission, and those who worked in the Reform Commission.

Fakhrul also thanked Salahuddin Ahmed, who represented BNP in the discussions of the National Consensus Commission.

Salahuddin, who also attended the signing ceremony, said, “The July Charter 2025 has been signed. It’s a historic day for the nation, and it will always be remembered as long as Bangladesh exists. Today is the day the nation’s hopes and aspirations start to be fulfilled. This is only the start of a journey.”

He said that the implementation of this charter would build a democratic state.

The BNP leader expressed hope that the journey would help build strong democratic and constitutional institutions and create balance among all branches of the state, where no organ would have authority over another.

“No organ of the state should dominate another. Within constitutional boundaries, each branch must maintain balance to build a truly functional democracy, Insha’Allah. We have a lot of work ahead—this is only the beginning,” Salahuddin added.

“We hope those who haven’t signed the July Charter yet will do so in the future,” Salahuddin said.

When asked about the Chief Adviser’s call to political parties to hold discussions on the election process, the BNP leader said that it was already outlined in the Constitution.

According to Article 65(2) of the Constitution, he explained, parliament shall consist of three hundred members to be elected in accordance with the law from single territorial constituencies by direct election.

The BNP leader said that the Election Commission is responsible for holding the election.

“So, there is no room to create confusion among the public about this matter.”

“However, if the Chief Adviser wishes to hold discussions on the issue, we are always open to dialogue as we believe in discussion and consultation,” Salahuddin added.

A large BNP delegation attended the signing ceremony of the historic July Charter.

On behalf of the party, Fakhrul and Salahuddin signed the Charter, while Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and Vice President of the National Consensus Commission Professor Ali Riaz also signed it along with other political leaders.

BNP Media Cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan said that over a hundred leaders from the party and its associate bodies were invited to take part in the event.

Besides Fakhrul and Salahuddin, BNP leaders Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Dr. Zahid Hossain, Dr. Asaduzzaman Ripon, Lutfozzaman Babar, Zainul Abedin Farroque, Ismail Jobiullah, Abdul Hai Shikder, Enamul Haque Chowdhury, Khairul Kabir Khokon, Barrister Nasir Uddin Asim, Dr. Mahdi Amin, Engineer Shahrin Islam Tuhin, Muktijoddha Dal President Ishtiaq Aziz Ulfat, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal President Rakibul Islam, and General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir, among others, attended the signing ceremony, reports UNB.
