BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has pledged to build a prosperous and self-reliant Bangladesh, promising economic security, social justice, and an inclusive political environment for future generations.

In a message posted on his verified Facebook page ahead of International Day of Democracy on September 15, he paid tribute to democracy martyrs, expressed condolences to the injured, and greeted democracy supporters worldwide.

Tarique highlighted the contributions of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in restoring multiparty democracy in Bangladesh. He recalled how autocratic regimes repeatedly undermined democratic institutions through party bans, media restrictions, voter fraud, and suppression of free expression.

He also criticised the Awami government for obstructing democratic processes over the past 15 years. Emphasising this year’s International Democracy Day theme, “Achieving Gender Equality Action by Action,” he stressed that democracy ensures equal opportunities and dignity for all genders.

Recalling the July uprising that toppled autocratic rule, Tarique called for collective efforts to restore democracy and build a nation marked by prosperity, self-reliance, social justice, and political inclusivity.

The UN-designated International Day of Democracy aims to raise global awareness about the power and importance of democratic governance.
