The BNP has urged China to extend repayment periods on existing loans and reconsider associated fees to help boost Bangladesh’s economy, said party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday.

He made the remarks while sharing details of the party’s recent five-day visit to China at a press conference held at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan, Dhaka.

“In our meetings with Chinese officials, we also called for increasing investment and ensuring better security for investors,” Fakhrul said.

The BNP delegation requested Chinese cooperation in advancing development across crucial sectors, including digital technology, renewable energy, healthcare, communications, and the blue economy.

The party also raised the ongoing political situation in Bangladesh during discussions. In response, Chinese leaders reportedly expressed willingness to help the country move toward a stronger democratic path.

Fakhrul added that although the issue of China’s support in Bangladesh’s last three national elections was discussed, the Chinese side did not provide any official remarks in this regard.

On the Rohingya issue, the BNP urged China to play a more proactive role in persuading Myanmar to ensure the safe, voluntary, and dignified repatriation of Rohingya refugees from Cox’s Bazar to Rakhine State.

He said Chinese officials assured the delegation of their sincere efforts to engage with the Myanmar government to facilitate an early resolution to the crisis.

China also expressed eagerness to work closely with Bangladesh’s next elected government to promote the country’s overall development and prosperity, Fakhrul noted.

During the visit, the BNP team discussed the Teesta River project, highlighting Bangladesh’s needs and seeking Chinese support. According to Fakhrul, the Chinese side responded positively.

Fakhrul described the visit as a step forward in strengthening ties between the two countries. “This trip has opened a new window to deepen the friendship between our two nations,” he said.

The high-level BNP delegation, comprising nine members and led by Fakhrul, visited China from 22 June at the invitation of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Other members included BNP Standing Committee members Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, and Begum Selima Rahman; Chairperson’s Advisers Zahir Uddin Swapan, Ismail Zabiullah, and Professor Sukomal Barua; Media Cell Convener Dr Moudud Hossain Alamgir Pavel; and Personal Secretary to the Chairperson ABM Abdus Sattar.

During their visit, the delegation held meetings with senior CPC leaders to discuss bilateral issues and explore avenues for closer cooperation between the CPC and BNP.
