Selina Hayat Ivy, former mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC), was arrested at around 5:45am on Friday following a night-long police raid at her residence in Deobhog.
A police team entered her home, known as 'Chunka Kutir', at around 11:30pm Thursday. Ivy initially refused to leave, saying she would not go with police during the night. After nearly six hours of standoff, she boarded a police vehicle in the early morning.
According to Additional Superintendent of Police Tarek Al Mehdi, Ivy is accused in at least five cases filed in connection with killings and attacks during the July uprising. She will be formally shown arrested in those cases.
Ivy, a three-time elected mayor of NCC, also served as senior vice-president of the district unit of Awami League.
News of the raid led to spontaneous protests as thousands of residents gathered outside her house throughout the night. As Ivy was taken away, the crowd, comprising men and women, chanted slogans in her support and condemned the late-night operation.
