Police have detained 54 individuals in connection with the attack on National Citizens' Party (NCP) leader Hasnat Abdullah’s car in Gazipur on Sunday evening.

The arrests were made during drives conducted in various areas of the city throughout the night, confirmed Md Rabiul Hasan, Deputy Commissioner (Crime-North) of Gazipur Metropolitan Police. He said the detainees are being interrogated and legal action is underway.

Local sources claim that many of the detainees are leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations.

A case is expected to be filed at Basan Police Station, with NCP’s Gazipur district representative Al Amin likely to be the complainant.

Two individuals — Md Nizam Uddin, a Jubo League leader from Ward 13 of Gazipur City, and Masum Ahmed Dipu, president of Sheikh Russel Shishu Kishore Parishad — were arrested from the Kashimpur area on Sunday night. Police have yet to disclose the identities of the other detainees.

Hasnat Abdullah, Chief Coordinator (South) of the NCP, came under attack near Chandana intersection in Gazipur city while returning to Dhaka from the Bangladesh Agricultural University campus. According to his driver, a group of unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants attacked the vehicle from behind, breaking its windows.

Following the attack, Abdullah took shelter at the Islamic University of Technology (IUT). Police reached the scene shortly after being informed and later escorted him safely to Dhaka.
