BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday expressed optimism that interim government head Dr Muhammad Yunus will succeed in resolving the country's political and other pressing challenges, paving the way for positive change.

Speaking at a discussion in Dhaka, Fakhrul said, “We do have problems, but they are being addressed. Significant progress has already been made. I want to thank Professor Yunus for stepping up to lead the country. I believe he will succeed. Let us support him, support each other, and move forward.”

The discussion, titled ‘Ambassador Sirajul Islam's Vision of Empowering Bangladesh: Leadership, Unity and Growth, Diplomacy and Governance for the Country’s Transformation’, was jointly organized by Empowerment Bangladesh and the Department of History and Philosophy at North South University.

Reflecting on the nation's current political climate, Fakhrul noted that many people are growing increasingly frustrated by the discourse in media and the rhetoric from politicians and commentators. “After the sacrifices made during the July-August uprising, people are naturally anxious about what lies ahead,” he said.

Despite the uncertainty, the BNP leader remained hopeful. “I firmly believe something good is coming — something truly transformative. The people of Bangladesh have always stood up for justice and have prevailed time and again.”

Fakhrul highlighted the critical role of youth in shaping the nation’s destiny, recalling their contributions from the Language Movement of 1952 to last year’s mass uprising. “The youth have always been at the forefront of our democratic and rights movements.”

He concluded by stressing the importance of democracy. “There is no alternative to democracy. It cannot be imposed from above — it must be practiced. And to practice it, we must ensure that space remains open.”

Earlier, a delegation from the Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL) met with Fakhrul to discuss the ongoing electoral process and reforms.
