Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has vowed to build a just society based on the ideals of the War of Independence and the July uprising. In a message issued today for Genocide Day, he expressed the interim government's commitment to fostering a fair society and upholding the rule of law.

"We are determined to move forward with the spirit of the Liberation War and the July uprising, to create a just society and establish the rule of law," Yunus said.

He highlighted the pivotal role of the students and the masses in the July uprising, which liberated the nation from the oppressive grip of dictatorship. "The New Bangladesh will emerge as a strong, peaceful, and democratic nation—this is our promise on Genocide Day," he added.

Observed annually on March 25, Genocide Day marks the horrific events of 1971 when Pakistani forces carried out a brutal crackdown on civilians, including in Dhaka. Yunus reflected solemnly on the tragic night, remembering the martyrs who gave their lives during the massacre, which remains a painful chapter in the nation's history.

"In March 1971, when Bangladesh was gripped by turmoil, military dictator Yahya Khan secretly fled Dhaka while the nation stood united in the non-cooperation movement," Yunus recounted. "On the evening of March 25, Pakistani troops launched 'Operation Search Light'—a horrific massacre of unarmed civilians."

He spoke of the thousands of innocent people, including students, teachers, and police officers, who were martyred in attacks on places like Dhaka University, Pilkhana, and Rajarbagh. "Their sacrifices paved the way for our hard-earned independence through a bloody nine-month war of liberation," Yunus said.

The Chief Adviser concluded by praying for the souls of the martyrs who lost their lives on that tragic night of March 25, 1971.
