LGRD and Cooperatives (LGRD) Minister Abdul Moyeen Khan today said politics should not be pursued merely to gain power but to establish people's rights and ensure their welfare.

"The tendency to spend huge amounts of money to win elections must be changed. Politics is about establishing the rights of people, not gaining the power. Politics cannot be conducted along the right path without the ideal of serving the people," he said.

He said this while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion with teachers of The Millennium University on the occasion of 'National Teachers' Day 2026' at his office in his Gulshan residence.

He said elected representatives are accountable to the people, while the people also bear the responsibility to elect the right representatives.

Describing the local government system as one of the fundamental pillars of democracy, the minister said, "Democracy cannot function effectively at the national level without establishing it at the grassroots level."

He also stressed the need for ensuring accountability of elected representatives.

"Reforming local government institutions, ensuring public services and holding local govt elections at five tiers remain as major challenges ahead for the current government," he said.

He also reiterated the government's commitment to ensure everyone's access to the poling centers and vote their candidates during the upcoming local government elections.

"Although elections involve competition, everyone must rise above political divisions and work for the country's development and the welfare of the people," he said.

Emphasising the role of NGOs in building society, Moyeen Khan said, "Bangladeshi NGOs have made significant contributions to poverty alleviation, improving people's living standards and various social sectors."

He also emphasized the need for strengthening coordination between local government institutions and NGOs to make development activities more effective.

The minister also inaugurated 'Khan Foundation' website at the time.

Millennium University's Board of Trustees chairperson Advocate Rokhsana Khandaker, vice-chancellor Professor Dr Abhinoy Chandra Saha, Khan Foundation's executive director Mahmuda Khatun, representatives of various NGOs, university teachers, and officials and employees of the Khan Foundation attended the discussion, reports BSS.
