Mirza Abbas Gets Emotional in Parliament, Vows to Serve

BNP Standing Committee member, Prime Minister’s Political Adviser and Dhaka-8 MP Mirza Abbas became emotional while delivering his first speech in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday (September 3).

Abbas attended the parliamentary session in a wheelchair after spending more than five months undergoing treatment, including abroad. He entered the chamber around 3:50pm and delivered his speech at about 5:45pm, when a solemn silence fell over the House.

Speaking after taking his seat, Abbas said he had returned to Parliament to work for the people.

“I have returned to Parliament to work. I want to work for the people. I have been undergoing treatment for five months, including abroad. I am still receiving treatment. I had to come to Parliament because of my emotions and affection for this institution,” he said.

Recalling his return to Parliament after a long gap, Abbas described the moment as one of the most emotional in his political career. He said he was deeply moved to have the opportunity to stand in the House again and speak on behalf of ordinary people.

Abbas expressed gratitude to the President, Prime Minister and Speaker for keeping track of his health during his treatment. He also thanked them for their humanitarian support.

He also paid tribute to former President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia during his speech.

Abbas used the microphone at the seat of BNP Standing Committee member and Dhaka-2 MP Amanullah Aman and received assistance from him while reading his written statement.

The emotional speech also moved several other lawmakers present in the chamber.
