Next President Likely From BNP Standing Committee

Discussions over Bangladesh's next president have intensified following the resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin, with senior BNP leaders emerging as the leading contenders for the country's highest constitutional office.

Following Shahabuddin's resignation on Friday, attention has shifted to who will be elected as Bangladesh's 23rd president. According to sources familiar with the matter, the BNP is expected to nominate a candidate from its National Standing Committee, the party's highest policymaking body.

The sources said no formal decision has yet been taken, and the issue has not been discussed at any official party forum. However, consultations are continuing at the highest levels of the party ahead of the presidential election.

Since the BNP assumed office on 17 February, several senior leaders have been mentioned as possible candidates for the presidency. Among those whose names have surfaced are Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Abdul Moyeen Khan and Nazrul Islam Khan.

In recent days, Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani and a former chief justice have also been mentioned in political discussions as potential candidates.

Sources said the list of possible nominees has narrowed, with health considerations and other factors affecting the prospects of some senior leaders.

Amid growing speculation, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has increasingly been discussed within political circles as a possible candidate for the presidency. Supporters inside and outside the party have publicly expressed support for his potential nomination.

Following Shahabuddin's resignation, Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad assumed the responsibilities of the President in accordance with the Constitution and will serve in the role until a new president is elected.

Under Article 123 of the Constitution, Parliament must elect a new president within 90 days if the office becomes vacant through resignation, death or removal. As the BNP holds a parliamentary majority, its nominee is widely expected to secure the presidency.

Political observers believe discussions over the party's choice are likely to continue until the BNP formally announces its nominee and Parliament elects the country's next head of state.
