President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned from office on Friday, bringing days of speculation over his future to an end.

The Parliament Secretariat confirmed the development in a press release, announcing that Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad will hold a press conference at 5:00 pm at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban to formally announce the acceptance of the president's resignation.

The statement, signed by Md Rashed Mizan, Assistant Director of the Parliament Secretariat, said the emergency press conference would take place in the oath-taking room on Level 1 of the Parliament's East Block.

Mohammed Shahabuddin was sworn in as the 22nd President of Bangladesh on April 24, 2023, after being elected unopposed with the nomination of the Awami League. His five-year term was due to expire in April 2028.

Following the resignation and departure of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina after the August 5, 2024 mass uprising, several political parties repeatedly demanded Shahabuddin's resignation. Multiple protest programmes were also held over the issue in the months that followed.
